Expanding Awareness On Child Safety In And Around Cars
Accidents are the leading cause of death for children, according to the National Center for Health Statistics. And some of the most common and preventable accidents happen in and around automobiles.
For 10 years, Safe Kids Worldwide and General Motors have worked to educate parents about proper safety seat use. Now they are working to expand awareness with a new program called Spot the Tot.
"Spot the Tot" emphasizes safety both in and around cars. One of the most tragic and preventable accidents is when a driver doesn't see a child playing behind a vehicle as he or she is backing up. It's hard to see them from the rearview and side mirrors, especially when they are a few feet away from the bumper. That's why it's important to get out of the car and do a walk around for a visual check before getting in, adjusting your mirrors and driving away.

"Behold: The 2010 Chevrolet Camaro in all its full-on production glory.
What? Well yes, it looks like that Camaro Concept we saw more than two and a half years ago at the 2006 Detroit Auto Show. And it looks exactly as you knew it would from two years of spy shots of the car under development. And it will look exactly like this when it goes on sale in March of next year. You expected what? That it would look like a Corsica or a Mark VIII?
Enthusiasts would no more forgive Chevrolet for watering down the stunning 2006 Camaro concept than they would forgive General Motors if it decided a year from now to cancel the Volt program. The concept, with its steely, all-business color, dark-tinted glass, pavement-skimming raked stance and fang-shaped side mirrors, looked like a 1969 Camaro designed by the Lockheed Skunk Works.
Of course, the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro production-specification cars pictured here — V6 models with 20-inch wheels that come as part of the RS trim package — don't get the slammed stance, chopped roof and black windows of the concept. Nor do they have the 22-inch rear and 21-inch front wheels of the concept.
The V8 model of the 2010 Chevrolet Camaro — called the SS — won't have that showcar ornamentation either. Chevy is holding back on revealing the SS for reasons that make sense only within the confines of GM's headquarters at the Renaissance Center in downtown Detroit, even though it looks very nearly identical to the V6 model with the RS package. (In case you were wondering, the SS will have the concept car's little mail-slot opening on the top of the front fascia. This particular aperture has no historical precedent in the world of Camaro and owes more to the Corvette Z06 or the Mini Cooper S.)"
Car enthusiasts and environmentalists everywhere have been buzzing about GM's upcoming Chevy Volt, and the company finally unveiled the production model in a spectacular way. The Volt is a mostly electric powered car that can drive 40 miles on a charged battery before it uses any gas. And even when the gas kicks in, it's to generate electricity to keep the car driving an additional 300 miles. The Volt's gasoline engine is never used to drive the car... only electric power drives the Volt. Even more shocking the Volt performs like any other vehicle in its class... it has the performance of a 150 horsepower engine, a top speed of 100 MPH, and can go from 0-60 in under nine seconds. Volt owners can charge the battery pack that runs through the length of the car by plugging into a port near the driver's side mirror. If your worried about the price of electricity, GM assures buyers that it will cost less than purchasing a cup of your favorite coffee” to recharge the car. Furthermore it costs just 2 cents per mile to drive the car and it will use less electricity in a year than a refrigerator. Like the Toyota Prius, the car has an onboard central display screen that will tell drivers if the car is fully charged, how the car is using electric power, and if the gasoline engine is working. The Volt's not bad looking either, combining classic Chevy design with a few angular, futuristic touches. Who says saving the environment can't also look good? The Volt will hit dealer floors in 2010, and though GM has yet to set a sticker price, analysts are estimating it to start at 40,000. So call or head to your GM dealer NOW to get on waiting list to reserve the Chevy Bolt the first American built Hybrid vehicle. I'm Elizabeth Chambers.
