Treatment of Bunions - Podiatrist in Springfield, IL Dr. John Sigle discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Bunions. *******www.myfootandanklecenter**** A bunion is a bone deformity caused by an enlargement of the joint at the base and side of the big toe (metatarsophalangeal joint). Bunions form when the toe moves out of place. The enlargement and its protuberance cause friction and pressure as they rub against footwear. Over time, the movement of the big toe angles in toward the other toes, sometimes overlapping a third toe (known as Hallux Valgus). The growing enlargement or protuberance then causes more irritation or inflammation. In some cases, the big toe moves toward the second toe and rotates or twists, which is known as Hallus Abducto Valgus. Bunions can also lead to other toe deformities, such as hammertoe. Many people with bunions suffer from discomfort and pain from the constant irritation, rubbing, and friction of the enlargement against shoes. The skin over the toe becomes red and tender. Because this joint flexes with every step, the bigger the bunion gets, the more it hurts to walk. Over time, bursitis or arthritis may set in, the skin on the bottom of the foot may become thicker, and everyday walking may become difficult—all contributing to chronic pain. Wearing shoes that are too tight is the leading cause of bunions. Bunions are not hereditary, but they do tend to run in families, usually because of a faulty foot structure. Foot injuries, neuromuscular problems, flat feet, and pronated feet can contribute to their formation. It is estimated that bunions occur in 33 percent of the population in Western countries. Treatment for Bunions Because they are bone deformities, bunions do not resolve by themselves. The goal for bunion treatment is twofold: first, to relieve the pressure and pain cause by irritations, and second to stop any progressive growth of the enlargement. Commonly used methods for reducing pressure and pain caused by bunions include: • The use of protective padding, often made from felt material, to eliminate the friction against shoes and help alleviate inflammation and skin problems. • Removal of corns and calluses on the foot. • Changing to carefully-fitted footwear designed to accommodate the bunion and not contribute toward its growth. • Orthotic devices—both over-the-counter and custom made—to help stabilize the joint and place the foot in the correct position for walking and standing. • Exercises to maintain joint mobility and prevent stiffness or arthritis. • Splints for nighttime wear to help the toes and joint align properly. This is often recommended for adolescents with bunions, because their bone development may still be adaptable. Surgical Treatment Depending on the size of the enlargement, misalignment of the toe, and pain experienced, conservative treatments may not be adequate to prevent progressive damage from bunions. In these cases, bunion surgery, known as a bunionectomy, may be advised to remove the bunion and realign the toe. Visit our website: *******www.myfootandanklecenter****

Sports Performance Anxiety Solution *******www.mentaltoughnesstrainer**** Transcript: Hi, I'm Craig Sigl, the mental toughness trainer for youth athletes. I was working with a 16-year-old baseball player, Bill, who would often step up to the batter's box very timidly, especially against better pitchers. I asked him what he is thinking when he became tentative like that and he said things like: "That guy is fast. I don't know if my swing is quick enough. I'm worried I'll choke and disappoint my team. I asked him what does it feel like when you get those thoughts. He said "scared." Fear of failure is what holds most athletes back from achieving peak performances. I teach a very simple concept that does MAGIC for players ability to change their attitudes even under pressure. I call it: "It's an AND world". You use it when your confidence is low and your self talk and thoughts are negative. You tell yourself -I can feel this "scared" feeling AND I can still go out there and win" In other words, go with it. Stop trying to fight being scared because the more you fight it, the worse it gets. I'm here to tell you that you can feel scared or pressured AND still play brilliantly! Elite athletes prove this every day. This is huge! So the next time you think: "I hope I don't choke", your next thought should be: "Huh, look at that, I'm worried AND I'm going to go out there and and play my best while feeling that. A big shift happened for Bill at his next game. The old thoughts came up when he faced the best pitcher in the league, but he ended up dominating him because he used "its an AND world" and didn't allow it to affect his play. Even better, after a few more games, the doubting voice in his head became quiet and he was able to focus more on the fundamentals and strategy of his game. I'm Craig Sigl, the mental toughness trainer. Start using "It's an AND world" and watch how easy it is for you to your build confidence. 90% of all athletes experience anxiety in sports. *******www.mentaltoughnesstrainer**** The old way is to distract or find some willpower to push through the negative emotions. The new way is to MASTER your emotional responses and own them. This video gives you the only permanent solution. Everything else is temporary! Transcript: Did you know that 90% of all athletes, young and old, experience performance anxiety that holds them back from playing their best? Well, what is performance anxiety? It's simply FEAR and this is what causes all the negative self-talk, weak discipline, and nervousness that destroys performances. When I ask athletes what are you afraid of, they almost always respond with something like: failing, making a mistake, or choking in competition. And then I ask them what is so bad about those things? I usually get something like: "I'll feel like a failure, I'll be disappointed, and I'll be embarrassed." All of those are emotions and if we keep breaking it down further, we learn that emotions are nothing more than chemicals our body makes. What if athletes stopped fearing their emotions and learned to master them instead? You got it, Fear goes away...and so does performance anxiety. This is very do-able. You can start with an attitude about failing or making mistakes that says: "Bring it all on, I can handle anything." I'm Craig Sigl, the mental toughness trainer teaching athletes how to master the pressure in 6 steps...for sports AND life. Here's an example of a 15 year old athlete that has done just that. *******www.mentaltoughnesstrainer****/testimonial/varsity-basketball-player-2/ Visit *******www.teenmentaltoughness**** to download FREE: "The 10 Commandments For A Great Sports Parent" ebook and "Master The Pressure" a GAME-CHANGING guided visualization for teen athletes.

Positive Self Talk in Sports *******www.mentaltoughnesstrainer**** Craig, the mental toughness trainer teaches a group of football players the importance of using positive self talk to get their game to the next level. Using Positive Self Talk In Sports Introduction from team coach: "This is a big deal. I want us really locked in on this meeting. I want us getting better because of it. We all need this. I'm going to introduce a guy here. His name is Craig Sigl. He is a Mental Toughness Trainer. We got to get ready. We got to get better up here. Let's go and let's listen to what he said. And let's take some of that into account -- okay? Me too! Shoot! It's easy in your head to be kind of like 'Oh, okay well...' A little tentative. You don't even play call it. Okay? We all have to get pass that. We all have to be better up here." Alright? Now getting back to the power of the subconsciously or the unconscious mind, which once again, is the cellular intelligence of your whole body. How do you get there? How do you get there to make that change? Let's say you've uncovered a coach has uncovered a belief in you that's, "I can't play against this opponent." "This guy always owns me on the line." I'm sure you've heard things like that. This team has got my number. Something like that limiting beliefs. Those are programs that are stored there. The first time you might have had a choke against that team or that opponent or even the thought, it could have sunk in and that's your new belief and you're hosed going out there on the field. You got to get rid of that before you ever get out on the field.

Ankle Arthritis - Podiatrist in Springfield, IL - Dr. John Sigle, DPM Dr. John Sigle of Foot & Ankle Center Of Illinois discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Ankle Arthritis. *******www.myfootandanklecenter**** Ankle surgery may be required to correct a serious deformity of the ankle and its bone structure. Injury (such as a fracture), birth defects, or changes throughout the course of life are the usual culprits. Diseases, such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and neuromuscular conditions, may cause severe foot and ankle deformities that, over time, cause pain and difficulty in walking. Ankle surgeries emphasize the realignment of the structure either around or after removal of the deformity. Various kinds of internal and external fixation devices—some temporary, others permanent—are often required to maintain the appropriate alignment during, and beyond, the healing process. Ankle surgeries vary in complexity, length, and severity, yet many of them today are conducted on a same-day, outpatient basis. Patients need to arrange for another person to take them home afterwards and stay with them for the first 24 hours following the surgery. Post-operative instructions, provided by your surgeon, will give you the information needed to care for your recovering ankle following surgery. Visit our website: *******www.myfootandanklecenter****

Ankle Fracture - Podiatrist in Springfield, IL - Dr. John Sigle, DPM Patient discusses Ankle Fracture treatment by Dr. John Sigle of Foot & Ankle Center of Illinois. *******www.myfootandanklecenter**** According to the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, doctors have noticed an increase in the number and severity of broken ankles since the 1970s, due, in part, to the Baby Boomer generation being active throughout every stage of their lives. The ankle has two joints, one on top of the other, and three bones. A broken ankle can involve one or more of the bones, as well as injury to the surrounding connecting tissues or ligaments. There are a wide variety of causes for broken ankles, most commonly a fall, an automobile accident, or sports-related trauma. Because a severe sprain can often mask the symptoms of a broken ankle, every ankle injury should be examined by a physician. Symptoms of a broken ankle include: • Bruising. • Swelling. • Immediate and severe pain. • Inability to put any weight on the injured foot. • Tenderness to the touch. • Deformity, particularly if there is a dislocation or a fracture. The treatment for a broken ankle usually involves a leg cast or brace if the fracture is stable. If the ligaments are also torn, or if the fracture created a loose fragment of bone that could irritate the joint, surgery may be required to secure the bones in place so they will heal properly. Foot Surgery - Podiatrist in Springfield, IL - Dr. John Sigle, DPM Patient discusses Foot Surgery by Dr. John Sigle of Foot & Ankle Center of Illinois. *******www.myfootandanklecenter**** Surgery on the foot, ankle, or lower leg is usually performed by podiatric surgeons and orthopedic surgeons specializing in the foot and ankle. Foot and ankle surgeries address a wide variety of foot problems, including: • Sprains and fractures. • Arthritis and joint disease. • Benign and malignant tumors. • Birth deformities. • Bunions. • Calluses and warts. • Corns and hammertoes. • Flatfeet. • Heel or toe spurs. • Neuromas (nerve tumors). Many foot and ankle surgeries today can be performed in the doctor's office or a surgical center on an outpatient basis. They frequently can be performed using local anesthesia, in some cases combined with sedation. Most foot surgeries require a period of immobilization after the procedures with protective devices, such as a bandages, splints, surgical shoes, casts, or open sandals. Limited weight bearing, elevating and icing the foot, and keeping the area dry are commonly required for the first two weeks following surgery until sutures are removed. Most surgeons will encourage post-operative exercise of the foot and legs to speed recovery. In addition, many patients need additional therapy or treatments after surgery in order to aid in the healing and recovery process. These may include physiotherapy, orthotic devices, and special footwear. After sufficient healing time, which varies from procedure to procedure, most patients can resume wearing their usual footwear. Visit our website: *******www.myfootandanklecenter****

Laser Treatment for Fungal Toenails - Podiatrist in Springfield, IL - John Sigle, DPM Patient discusses Laser Fungal Toenail treatment by Dr. John Sigle of Foot & Ankle Center of Illinois. *******www.myfootandanklecenter**** Suggestions for preventing fungal nails include: • Don't share nail clippers or nail files with others. • Don't share shoes or socks with others. • Try not to injure your nail, such as by cutting it too short (trauma to the nail may lead to infections). • Wear dry cotton socks and change them two or three times a day if necessary. • Wear dry shoes that allow air to circulate around your feet (tight, enclosed, moist shoes contribute to fungal toenail infections). • Wear shower sandals or shower shoes when you are at a public pool or shower.
