Oil Can Boyd and Jim Corsi think that David Ortiz and the rest of the Red Sox are doing fine this season. Despite Gagne's bad outings, they think Curt Schilling, Daisuke Matsuzaka and Josh Beckett's pitching will carry them through to the postseason.

A season preview of what is to come this summer. Includes all of the starters on the Red Sox squad.
The Cubs swept the White Sox last weekend and now must travel against Ozzie Guillen’s squad on Friday to begin a three game series. Ryan Dempster will pitched well last time out against the White Sox going 8 innings and only allowing 1 earned run. The converted reliever has allowed only 4 earned runs over his last 3 starts working 22 innings. The White Sox has struggled on their road trip losing 4 of their last 5 heading into Thursday’s action. Big Jose Contreras got lit up by the Cubs his last time out giving up 9 earned runs in just 3 1/3rd innings. The right-hander and has dropped his last 3 decisions giving up 30 hits and 5 walks in 16 innings over that span. Dempster is in good form and the Cubs are 5-1 in his last 5 starts. Play Chicago at –105.
With big Carlos Zambrano on the DL Sean Marshall was called up to replace their Ace in the rotation Marshall in his first start this season was hit by the Baltimore Orioles giving up 4 runs and 7 hits working just 4 2/3rd innings. White Sox starter Mark Buerhle looked very sharp last time out against the LA Dodgers giving up just 1 earned run over 8 innings. It was like the Buerhle of old as the game took only 2 hours and 5 minutes to complete. Heading into their weekend series with the Cubs the White Sox were 24-11 at home. Behind Buehle play the White Sox at –120.
It should be a great series in Tampa as the surprising Rays host the Red Sox in probably the biggest series in the history of the Tampa Bay franchise. Young 23 year old right-hander Justin Masterson will get the start in game 1 of this series. Masterson pitched on June 3rd against the Rays getting the victory despite giving up 4 earned runs in 6 innings. Tampa Bay plays well at home sporting a 30-13 record. James Shields has been money at home sporting an ERA at 1.99 in 8 home starts this season. The bullpen has been outstanding for the Rays as they sport an ERA of 1.91 at home this season. No more gas cans in the Tampa Bay Rays pen anymore. The play here is on the Rays at home behind their solid home record and Shields form at home. Play Tampa at –120.
The Sox continue a tough schedule in July as they have a combined 13 games against the Yankees and first place Angels. Young Jon Lester has had a solid season with a 6-3 record and an ERA at 3.48 in 18 starts on the season. The Yanks closed the month with two losses getting solid pitching but only tallying 2 runs combined in each game. Hideki Matsui and his .323 batting average hit the DL with inflammation in his left knee. Center fielder Johnny Damon is in a slump with only 3 hits in his last 22 at bats and has been troubled by a sore foot. The Yankees sit behind the Jays by 7 games in the loss column through 83 games. Andy Pettitte has pitched well surrendering only 3 earned runs over his last 4 starts working 27 innings. Behind both starters play this one under 9 ½ runs.
After taking game 1 of their series Tampa Bay sits in first place in the AL East on July 1st. The Jay’s during the years could put up runs on the board but finally their pitching came around and especially their bullpen where it sits with an ERA of 3.21 on the season. Gone are the days when their manager would ponder the possibility of starting games with their bullpen and finishing them with a starter. Jay’s starter Scott Kazmir has put up solid numbers on the season. Through 11 starts the lefthander sits with an ERA at 2.28 and opposing teams bat .192 against him. Heading into the season Kazmir is sitting with an ERA under 3 in 15 starts against Boston. This is Dice K’s third start since coming off the DL for an ailing shoulder and has pitched only 6 innings in 2 starts back. The Rays should get into the Red Sox bullpen in this one. Behind Kazmir, their potent offense and their solid 31-13 home record through 44 games play Tampa Bay at –115.
Boston meets the Yankees on the 4th in their second of 4 meetings this holiday weekend. Josh Beckett has pitched well over his last 3 starts giving up just 4 earned runs in 22 innings pitched. The Yankees sputtered a bit losing 3 of their last 4 prior to opening up their series with Boston. Rasner hasn’t been going very deep in games completing 5 innings or less over his last 4 starts and giving up 17 earned runs in only 18 2/3 rd’s innings of work. Becket owns 2 victories over the Yankees this season with an ERA under 4. We should get at least 7 strong innings from the Red Sox starter here and maybe even more based on the recent performance by the Red Sox bullpen. The play here is with the Red Sox at –125.
