Warum auf die Straße gehen? Seinen Ursprung nahm der CSD 1969, zu einer Zeit, in der LesBiSchwulTrans*-Personen gesellschaftlich und vom Staat rechtlich gestützt ausgegrenzt wurden. Zur Eskalation kam es in der Nacht vom 27. auf den 28. Juni 1969 in New York, wo nach willkürlichen Polizeirazzien in Lokalen mit homosexuellem und Trans*-Zielpublikum (im Stonewall Inn; daher auch Stonewall Riots) in der Christopher Street mehr als 2000 Menschen auf die Straße gingen. Gemeinsam wurde gegen die Diskriminierung und Unterdrückung von Andersliebenden und für deren Gleichberechtigung gekämpft. Diese Proteste legten den Grundstein für den ersten Christopher Street Day (CSD) und für friedliche Protestmärsche, die heute weltweit und jährlich stattfinden.
