The Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering at Southern Methodist University, encourages all of their engineering majors to utilize the ample resources that the Hart Center for Engineering Leadership (HCEL) provides. The Hart Center for Engineering Leadership gives students an advantage in the professional world by providing them the tools needed to obtain values of intellectual strength, self confidence, and access to opportunities. The HCEL strives to create well-rounded engineers and leaders in today’s professional world by building customized development plans, providing leadership coaching and giving 360˚feedback to their students. At the HCEL they believe all students have the potential to gain leadership skills that produce powerful results. The HCEL organizes student’s academic years into a Transition Program. The Transition Program is segmented into to four academic years and is customized to fir each students needs: The first year focuses on the student’s personal development The second year focuses on people leadership The third year focuses on leaving a legacy at SMU& Bobby B. Lyle School of Engineering The fourth year launches students into the strategic transition program The HCEL supervises twenty student organizations and establishes goals for themselves in order to provide direction to students and give them the tools needed to lead a strong organization. The Association of Computing Machinery (ACM) originally had six members in 2008 and has since grown 700%, into over 50 active members. The ACM worked with organization leaders to develop the this organization through a personal work relationship and were able to share their ideas about various opportunities to promote member growth and encourage students to build a legacy on campus. There are also mentor programs available which enable engineering students to acquire professional knowledge and guidance, while creating a  network of professional engineers, professors, deans and fellow peers. By providing engineering students Technology Career Fairs, students are able to find co-ops, internships and full time jobs. The HCEL also encourages students to give back to the community with various projects in the Engineering in the City program.
