“In our dream we have limitless resources, and the people yield themselves with perfect docility to our molding hand. The present educational conventions fade from our minds; and, unhampered by tradition, we work our own good will upon a grateful and responsive rural folk. We shall not try to make these people or any of their children into philosophers or men of learning or of science. We are not to raise up among them authors, orators, poets, or men of letters. We shall not search for embryo great artists, painters, musicians. Nor will we cherish even the humbler ambition to raise up from among them lawyers, doctors, preachers, statesmen, of whom we now have ample supply." - Rev. Frederick T. Gates, Business Advisor to John D. Rockefeller Sr., 1913 The current American school system took root around the turn of the century. In 1903, John D. Rockefeller founded the General Education Board, which provided major funding for schools across the country and was especially active in promoting the State-controlled public school movement. Rockefeller Education Board, 1915 The General Education Board was not interested in encouraging critical thinking. Rather, its focus was on organizing children and creating reliable, predictable, obedient citizens. As award-winning former teacher John Gatto puts it, “school was looked upon from the first part of the 20th Century as a branch of industry and a tool of governance.” The Rockefellers, along with other financial elite and their philanthropic organizations (such as the Gates, Carnegies, and Vanderbilts) have been able to mold society by funding and pushing compulsory state schooling for the masses. Here’s a timeline to show the radical shift in education and the influence of the financial elite. Pre 1840: Literacy Rates High, Schools Predominantly Private and Locally Controlled Up until the 1840’s, the American school system was mainly private, decentralized, and home schooling was common. Americans were well educa

This video was hard for me to do. You will see how I was struggling and rambled a bit, mostly because of my anxiety and the sensitivity of the subject. Please excuse my talking with my hands with my comb in hand. I was trying hard to stay focused. There's absolutely nothing wrong with identifying as a strong black woman, however I no longer subscribe to it. The history of black people identified as strong and tough is the basis for putting black people in harsh work and living environments while not providing us with resources and supports. Overtime black people have become accustomed to struggle, pain, and doing without. Most black people ascribe to this description which is understandable. I believe this is the reason why some people don't want to be black because being black is synonymous with harder life and tougher conditions. I feel the words we use and how we respond to what we are called is very important. For me, when I’m referred to as a strong black woman, it tells the other person that I come from a lineage of struggle and I learned to survive therefore I am available for whatever you throw at me because I'm accustomed to it. I believe if I require everyone to describe me as smart, capable and deserving to replace the description of being strong, it will resonate with all people and the expectations of me will be appropriate. I don't expect others to agree with me. This adds to the major hindrance in forming bonds with others. I am who I am and that is o.k. The Experiences of Late-Diagnosed Women with Autism Spectrum Disorder: The women also described their emotional reactions to having a late diagnosis and shared their regret and anger at having "tried to be good" for so long and, as a result, being missed. One young woman felt that knowing about her diagnosis could have protected her in risky social situations "Had I known about Asperger's, I think I'd have known that I'm more suggestible....and I might not have ended up in the situations that I...
