This is a review of the latest (to this date) information on the BART Police shooting of Oscar Grant. The Grant family lawyer John Burris has filed a $25 million damage claim. Two protests are planned for Wednesday one at 3 PM at Fruitvale BART.
This is my report of the riots that broke out during what was planned to be a peaceful protest of the death of Oscar Grant at the hand of BART Police Officer Johannes Mehserle. It's a story of what happeened from points of view as its happening.
I met separately with Oakland City Attorney John Russo and California Commericial Investments' Managing Partner Phil Tagami regarding their view of the riots. Tagami has several well-known buildings including the Rotunda and the Fox, which opens Feb 5th.
As I left City Hall there was a small group of people carrying home-made signs reading "Stop Police Brutality" and screaming "You're fired!" At passing police officers in cars. I talked to them, and it turned out at least one person was from West Oakland.
I was just informed today, Saturday evening January 10th, 2009, that BART is holding a "community meeting" on Sunday, January 11th, which is tommorrow, from 2 PM to 4 PM at 101 Eighth Street, the Joseph P. Bort MetroCenter in Oakland, off Lake Merritt BART
Oakland City Councilmember Desley Brooks takes on the BART Board and BART Board Member Carol Ward Allen at the community meeting held on Sunday, January 11th at 101 Eight Street. Ward Allen walked out of the meeting.
*******oaklandfocus.blogspot**** BART Board's Lynette Sweet said BART Police did not explain that they talked to Officer Johannes Mesherle until Sunday. What Gee said is here. BART also has not posted an apology to the Grant Family on its website.
A number of events came together such that I decided to go to Washington DC to cover Inauguration-related happenings. I figured waiting stand-by was my only option -- but not a good one. But I made United Flight 100 to Dulles!
*******oaklandfocus.blogspot**** -- Oakland's Poet Laurette Ishmael Reed took time to share his view on the BART Shooting, Oakland, and police brutality against Black men.
The iReport team wants to know what my do-over-day would be. Well, the one I was thinking of, when I -- as Chairman -- wrote an email to the board of the Oakland Super Bowl Bidding Committee/
*******oaklandfocus.blogspot**** -- I talked with Oakland District 3 Councilmember Nancy Nadel at the BART Shooting Community meeting held January 8th 2009. Here, Nadel expresses her concern about the use of police "deadly force" on people of color.
At the press conference explaining the settlement between the City of Oakland and the Oakland Housing Authority I talked with District 2 Councilmember Pat Kernighan about Oakland's Economic Crisis.
The cell phone gun is now in media view after a raid of an Italian Mafia group last fall. A 28-year old man captured had this device, but the the others got away. I fear this weapon - which is in the United States - would wind up in our high schools.
*******oaklandfocus.blogspot**** -- A well-placed source reported to me that BART Shooting victim Oscar Grant was found to have Crack Cocaine in his body, and planted through his buttocks. My source also accuses KTVU TV News of delaying video release.
*******oaklandfocus.blogspot**** -- Newspaper publisher and BART Board Member James Fang is much talked about but seldom talked to. At a BART Shooting meeting where he was accused of being racist, I talked to Fang about the matter of the BART shooting.
*******oaklandfocus.blogspot**** - This week I posted a vlog on Oscar Grant and what my source claims is an autopsy where crack cocaine was found in his body. Here is an update and what happened when SF Chronicle's Phil Bronstein picked up the story. Distributed by Tubemogul.
