While attending a medical conference in Paris, American physician Dr. Ben McKenna (James Stewart), his wife, retired musical theater actress and singer Jo McKenna (Doris Day) and their adolescent son Hank (Christopher Olsen) decide to take a side trip to among other places Marrekesh, French Morocco. With a knife plunged into his back, Frenchman Louis Bernard (Daniel Gelin), who the family met earlier in their bus ride into Marrakesh and who is now masquerading as an Arab, approaches Ben, cryptically whispering that there will be an attempted assassination in London of a statesman. “The Storm Clouds Cantata” is a chorale of the Australian composer Arthur Benjamin. This piece was written for the assassination scene in the Alfred Hitchcock 1934 film. For the 1953 remake of the movie Hitchcock asked his new musical collaborator, Bernard Herrmann, to not only conduct the orchestra on screen but write a new piece as well. Herrmann accepted the former offer but declined the latter, re-orchestrating the Cantata and conducting himself the London Symphony Orchestra, the Covent Garden Chorus and mezzo-soprano soloist Barbara Howitt.
