Formerly liquidated retailer CompUSA is making a comback, and despite its reputation as a worst-of-breed consumer electronics retailer, both Scott McNulty from MacUser and John Falcone from CNET feel that its ressurection could actually be a good thing. Not because either particularly love the brand, nor do they enjoy the retail shopping experience, but more that ANY competition to BestBuy's marketplace monopoly will go a long way. Of course, there's word that the new stores will be taking some of Apple's consumer-friendly approach to floor display models of computers, allowing users to get a true feel for the computer (or update their Facebook status), but without the Apple-ness of the Apple Store, can CompUSA be successful? Speaking of Apple, Microsoft's latest 'Laptop Hunters' advertisment takes aim at Apple's weakest point: Price. In the past, Microsoft marketing focused more on the fact that "Hey, we're cool too!" with its 'I'm a PC' campaign. This new approach of targeting constrained consumer wallets seems like a bit of a hit. Our panel weighs in on the truth behind the "Apple tax," and whether this new campaign will help people pick up computers.
