Transcript by Newsy**** BY CHRISTINA HARTMAN You're watching multisource politics news analysis from Newsy PRESIDENT JIMMY CARTER: “So I would say that the country is getting acclimated to a president who might be female, who might, obviously, now, be black, and who might be as well a gay person." (Big Think) Former President Jimmy Carter says America is ready for a gay president. His comments come in an interview with website Big Think. CARTER: “Step-by-step, we have realized that this issue of homosexuality has the same adverse and progressive elements as when we dealt with the race issue 50 years ago, or 40 years ago.” The former president says he doesn’t know about the next election -- but says we’re talking sometime in the near future. Panelists on CNN are divided -- a Republican strategist, political columnist and a Democratic strategist. Can you guess who’s who? RICH GALEN, GOP STRATEGIST: “I have spent almost all my entire adult life not paying attention to any theory that Jimmy Carter has. I think I'll keep on doing that.” JOHN AVLON, COLUMNIST: “Eventually, of course, at one point in history we will have a gay president because they run as a president who -- and an American who happens to be gay rather than a gay American president.” JAMES CARVILLE, DEMOCRATIC STRATEGIST: “I'm pretty sure we haven't had a female president yet. I'm less sure we don't have a gay president. How do we know if we haven't had one?” First Things - a blog that says it’s dedicated to a “religiously informed public” -- is, safe to say, not receptive to the former president’s idea -- but concludes -- he’s probably right. “A significant number of Americans have exchanged both the Bible and two millennia of church teaching for a form of liberal-libertarianism in which sexual liberty always trump virtue and natural law, not to mention tradition and the social order.” But to anchors on Fox News’ Red Eye - it’s not so serious. In fact - it’s downright funny. GREG GUTFIELD: “Yes, the wrinkly rascal was asked by Big Think**** (I think they sell brake pads online) if America is ready for a head of state who isn't straight.” BERNADETTE PAULEY: “I have no problem with a gay president, but it better be a butch female, but it better not be a president that will be guest judging on Project Runway. That’s just way too embarrassing.” (LAUGHTER) GUTFIELD: “A butch lesbian who is in the military may be the greatest thing.” PAULEY: “Take no prisoners.” Still -- The Daily Caller’s Laura Donovan says -- hypocrisy, anyone? “Though Carter believes America is ready to elect a gay president, he isn’t quite sure that president should be allowed to marry, at least according to a 2005 Fox News interview.” In that interview Donovan mentions -- Carter had said -- quote -- “There should be a distinction between so-called gay marriages … and a church-ordained blessing of God on a union.” To see the full transcript of that 2005 interview, or to see more of his interview with Big Think -- visit the links in our transcript section.
