BY MAURICE SCARBOROUGH ANCHOR CHRISTINA HARTMAN You're watching multisource tech video news analysis from Newsy. It’s the cigarette for the Facebook generation. Electronic cigarette maker Blu is set to roll out a new line of E-cigs that will alert you when other e-smokers are nearby. A writer for Time’s Techland blog says - seriously? “Because everything needs to be ‘social’ nowadays... Get within 50 feet of someone who smokes your same brand, and both of your packs will light up and vibrate. Then the two of you can high five each other and exchange contact information - all of which is stored inside your pack of smokes.” Recently companies have been adding Wi-Fi communication to a range of devices. Like Nintendo -- which added the function to its new 3DS handheld. But an analyst for Forrester Research tells The New York Times, there’s a bit of a difference between gaming and smoking. “The way that groups of affinity are conferred just by physical proximity makes a bit of sense... If someone walks by with a Nintendo, great, I share a common interest. The fact that I walk by a smoker? Seems like a weak link.” A writer for tech blog Gizmodo agrees, saying the social e-smoking idea makes absolutely no sense. “I'm sorry, but if you're going to smoke e-cigarettes, maybe you should just get back onto the hard stuff, or go cold turkey. You look bloody stupid. If you want to look stupid together though, be my guest.” Blu founder Jason Healy told The New York Times this idea is the next big thing. But a blogger for Gawker breaks down a few things Healy left out. “The founder of Blu raves ‘you'll meet more people than ever, just because of the wow factor.’ Of course he neglects to mention what kind of people: e-cigarette smokers. If your idea of a great time is chilling outside the 7-11 with weird goth teenagers, eastern european clubbers and Katherine Heigl, then Blu is for you.” The e-cigarettes will retail for $80 dollars when they hit stores. That will get you one charger pack, which holds five cartridges, two batteries, a wall charger, a USB charger, and a five pack of different flavors.
