1999 (An inspirational anthem by veteran entertainer/recording artist, Shirley Bassey, and the Black Mountain Male Chorus) World In Union is officially the Anthem of the Rugby World Cup sporting event, and over the years it has been recorded by many artists. Dame Shirley delivers a vibrantly/rich POP flavor to the song and she is accompanied by the Black Mountain Male Chorus; most of the other renditions have been recorded by classical artists. (All are good....just different!) In addition to some World Cup Rugby photos, many of the pictures included are from the Olympics. The lyrics of this song are really about the world coming together in peace, and also about striving to be the best that one can be, no matter what one is striving for. What a wonderful & unique concept! Unfortunately, as of late, the only place where this seems to happen is at World Sports Events. The athletes symbolize the words of this song, and visa versa! (Regards, Scot) MORE About This Song: "World in Union", with lyrics by Charlie Skarbek, is a theme song for the Rugby World Cup that attempts to capture the spirit of international friendship which pervades rugby union culture the world over. The melody is "Thaxted" — the stately theme from the middle section of "Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity", a movement from Gustav Holst's "The Planets", and was originally adapted by Holst for its use in the English/Anglican patriotic hymn, "I Vow to Thee My Country". The song was commissioned by the International Rugby Board (at that time the International Rugby Football Board), the sport's governing body, in 1991 and it has now become synonymous with the "gathering of the nations" that the four-yearly tournament represents. The 1999 Single was recorded both as a duet with Shirley Bassey and Bryn Terfel, a solo version by Shirley, and a version with just the chorus. This single reached #35 on the Charts. (Most of Bassey's record sales over the past 5 decades have been not from singles, but from sale of her long playing LPs/CD's) LYRICS: There's a dream I feel, so rare, so real All the world in union The world as one Gathering together One mind, one heart Every creed, every colour Once joined, never apart Searching for the best in me I will find what I can be If I win, lose or draw It's a victory for all It's the world in union The world as one As we climb to reach our destiny A new age has begun We face high mountains Must cross rough seas We must take our place in history And live with dignity It's the world in union The world as one As we climb to reach our destiny A new age has begun Build a world A world in union A new age has begun
